During the mid-'60s the musical variety TV show Shindig! was a popular showcase for musical artists, exposing North American TV viewers to some of the biggest stars of the decade as well as up-and-coming artists such as The Mamas and Papas and The Who. It was only natural, therefore, for Ike & Tina Turner to find their way onto the Shindig! TV stage. During the 60s and early 70s, The Ike & Tina Turner Revue specialized in a hard-driving, funked-up hybrid of soul and rock. Ike was the guitarist and bandleader while Tina sang lead vocals and dominated the shows with her raw sexual energy, power and rock & roll sensibilities.
This video captures Tina Turner’s dynamic energy and powerhouse vocals during a performance of the Ike & Tina Turner review on Shindig! Accompanied by the review’s backup singers - the Ikettes - along with the Shindig! house band, dancers and singers here is Tina singing a ‘Ooh Poo Pah Doo’, a single released by Ike & Tina in 1966. The closing credits roll over the performance and add on clips of the Shindig! go-go dancers repeat several time. Regardless, this classic video offers us a peek at the fabulous Tina Turner and an unique glimpse into the popular music scene of the mid-sixties. Oh, and check out a young Neil Sedaka on the piano. Listen to Tina Turner, Neil Sedaka and other artists from the 60s, 70s & 80s on 24/7 on Dusty Discs Radio.
